Information on Avaí Futebol Clube

History of the Club

Original emblem Current emblem

Until the beginning of the 20th century, football was a sport reserved for aristocrats and privileged European immigrants. However, soon it was discovered that those who were really good at this sport were young manual workers. There was a group of adolescents who gathered in the district of Pedra Grande in Florianopolis on every Sunday to kick the ball around. It was Amadeu Horn, the Founder of the Avahy Foot-Ball Club, who discovered these children’s talents and provided our first blue-and-white striped uniform in 1923. The spelling of the name of the club was later changed to “Avaí” but the name derives from the Battle of Avaí fought by the Tri Nations (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay) against Paraguay in 1868.

Ranked at the 56th place by CONMEBOL and with 15 Santa Catarina State Championship titles, Avaí Futebol Clube became the champion of Série C in 1998, spent few years in Série B and came back to Série A (Brasileirão) in 2009. The club finished the 2009 season in the 6th place and reached the quarter-finals in Copa Sul Americana in 2010.

Today Avaí Futebol Clube is an association headed by Dr. João Nilson Zunino (President) and Dr. Nilton Macedo Machado (Vice-President), led by 5 Strategic Directors and administered by 3 Executive Directors. A graduate of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Dr. Zunino is also the president of Santa Luzia Medical Laboratories (www.sluzia.com.br), the biggest clinical analysis laboratory in the southern region of Brazil. Dr. Zunino has introduced various new business practices to the Avaí Futebol Clube in order to promote transparency and a healthy balance sheet.

Stadium and Training Facilities

The Estádio Adolfo Konder (a.k.a. Campo da Liga) was inaugurated in 1930 on the waterfront of Florianópolis and became the centre stage to numerous titles won by the Avaí FC including the match between Avaí and Santos featuring Pélé in 1972.

In order to accommodate the ever-increasing number of supporters, the club moved to a newly constructed stadium, Estádio Aberdal Ramos da Silva, known as the Ressacada Stadium by the locals, in 1983. The stadium is located 5 minutes away from the Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport. This all-seated stadium can accommodate 18,000 spectators and features 104 VIP boxes and 2 VIP Areas.

Our professional and youth teams share a 3.9 million square feet training facility with 2 full-size fields, 1 half-size field, 2 fitness rooms, a medical department with 4 doctors, physiotherapists and massage therapists and a cafeteria supervised by a nutritionist.

There are also 2 covered synthetic fields managed by Fair Play next to the Ressacada stadium. Depending on the weather condition, training is sometimes conducted on these synthetic fields. The swimming pool at a local school is also used for recovery training.
