City of Florianopolis

Florianopolis is the capital city of the Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil. The city is 1 hour away from São Paulo by plane. Newsweek reported Florianopolis in the “10 most dynamic cities in the world” in 2006. The Brazilian magazine Veja recently named Florianopolis as the “best city to live in Brazil”. Florianópolis is also the Brazilian city that has most increased in wealth over the last three decades.

Florianopolis has a population of approximately 410,000. This number grows up to 980,000 if we include the Greater Florianopolis. The population is mostly composed of Brazilians of European descendent, mainly from the Azores Islands (Portugal), Germany and Italy.

Florianopolis is a well-known tourism destination in Brazil. Florianopolis is blessed with 42 beautiful beaches and offers excellent tourism products. Football is the passion of all Florianopolitanos. The two famous clubs are Avaí Futebol Clube known as "O Leão da Ilha" (Lion of the Island) and Figueirense Futebol Clube known as “O Furacão do Estreito “ (Hurricane of Estreito). Figueirense also plays in the Série A and their stadium (Orlando Scarpelli) is located in the Estreito neighborhood. “O Clássico da Capital” (derby) is something that you cannot miss during your stay in Florianopolis. Apart from football, rowing and tennis are well-practiced sports in the city. The 3 time Rolland Garros (French Open) winner, Gustavo Kuerten, is from Florianopolis and a passionate fan of Avaí FC. He watches all Avaí matches from his VIP box in the Ressacada stadium.
